Simply put, counselling is a type of talking therapy which allows you to explore the way you think, feel and behave and explore any problems you are experiencing. A counsellor such as myself is a trained, objective professional who works within a clear boundary framework underpinned by confidentiality in a safe, non-judgemental place. I listen to hear not to fix, with empathy and congruence. I can support you understand your thinking style, why you feel a certain way and support you to make changes using skills that can help you solve your own problems.
Being self-aware and having the capability to think and feel emotions with clarity and understanding is part and parcel of being human. Unlike animals, our thought processes rely on far more than instinct alone, i.e. relationships, upbringing and culture, in other words our core beliefs! Because of this, there is scope for the way we think to become a problem and to affect our emotions. Thanks to the evolution of science and technology we now have a clearer understanding of the human brain and are able to look at these issues in a different way. Today, the art of talking therapies such as counselling/emotional coaching are used to help people come to terms with any problems they are facing, with the ultimate aim of overcoming them, either alongside medical interventions or as a therapy in its own right. The benefits of counselling/emotional coaching include a greater degree of self-awareness and understanding of yourself and others. Which in turn improves self-esteem. I believe self-awareness is the ability to know and understand what stops us from having the success we want and deserve. It gives us a life of authenticity, clarity, vitality, happiness, inner peace and joy which will be reflected in our personal relationships.
